A Murder of Crows is somewhat of a departure from my first album, The Last Rain. The tone is much more darker and macabre. I have always been a fan of Agatha Christie novels and of the mystery genre in general. This album is framed much like one of those old mystery novels. There is more use of complex chords in this peace to create the mood of a murder mystery novel. There is also a lot of use of triple meter, and even odd meter, in this album. I have often felt that triple meter lends to a more offbeat feel and lilt to music.

The first piece, A Murder of Crows, is based on a dream I had of seeing a lot of dead birds in my backyard. While the birds in the dream were not crows, I felt that I wanted to play on the pun of the word murder. If you don't know already a "murder" is the word used for a group of crows

Caissa is the goddess of chess. So Caissa's Game literally is the game of chess. I have often loved the use of chess as a form of duplicitous planning. In Agatha Christie novels there is a trope of the "scheming woman" who plots a murder or plots revenge. This tune is meant to capture the scheming of a person in planning something sinister.

Footfall is a minor blues theme that is meant to capture the idea of a person hearing footsteps in a house. Everyone has that feeling of being in a house and hearing steps and wondering where they are coming from.

Nightshade is a reference to both the feel of nightfall and the actual poison. Poison is a common murder weapon in older mystery novels. The tune is a bossa that captures the feeling of someone realizing that they have been poisoned.

Drawing of Thirteen represents a gathering a suspects. In most mystery novels, the detective gathers a group of people he suspects of being the murderer. Though this is a more unlucky group of suspects, since there are thirteen.

Requiem is a morbid piece that captures the funereal feeling of many mystery novels. This piece was somewhat inspired by trumpeter Woody Shaw's "Organ Grinder".
